Organizational Background
FIMO (Female in Media Organisation) is a an independent non-profit, non-political, nonpartisan media development organization based in Hargeisa, Somaliland. FIMO is dedicated to capacity building and service delivery to the marginalized women in media in Somaliland. FIMO is an advocate for a professional and ethical journalism.
In 2018 a group of dynamic female journalist working in the media sector in Somaliland got together to establish a media development organisation for women. Considering their associations with the media sector the group was aware of the plethora of problems plaguing the country’ media sector. FIMO has been carrying several interventions in media development prior to establishing the organisation, offering multiple media trainings. The type of activities undertaken by the organization range from capacity building to service delivery, with focus remaining on female journalists’ skills and education enhancement.
Although a somewhat new entry in the media development arena, FIMO – owing to the linkages of its directors with national & international funding agencies – enjoys a diverse portfolio, characterized by partnership with organizations like IMS-FOJO, IRI and Somaliland National Electoral Committee as well as many Civil Society Organisations in Somaliland.
What FIMO Does?
Influenced by the personal experience of young female journalists, in a male dominated sector where women are viewed a mare accessory in the industry and are only given very limited and specific roles it was necessary to establish a platform and a space that gives the priority to women in media.
Mission Statement
The mission of FIMO is to contribute to the professional development of female journalists, through a value system based, to help build a better media sector where female journalists are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in the sector, which can be realized by increasing access to support and services through capacity building and advocacy.
Vision
An enabling environment that promotes professional journalism and levelled playing field for female journalists, where they can freely practice their skills without misogyny or discrimination and develop their leadership qualities to make them an active contributor within the sector.
GOAL
FIMO’s goal’s is to establish a pool of professional female journalists with improved media education and skills through mobilization, capacity building, advocacy and strengthening professional journalism at the grass root level.
