The Female in Media Organization (FIMO), in collaboration with the National Electoral Commission of Somaliland (NEC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), has successfully concluded a five-day training program for 20 female journalists based in Hargeisa.
The training focused on cybersecurity, combating misinformation, and preventing news that could create social conflict, equipping participants with essential skills to navigate the digital media landscape safely and responsibly.
During the program, participants engaged in interactive sessions and practical exercises designed to:
-
Strengthen their understanding of digital security and personal data protection;
-
Identify, verify, and counter false or misleading information online;
-
Report news responsibly while minimizing risks of social tensions or conflict;
-
Effectively use social media platforms as professional communication tools.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, representatives from FIMO and NIMD emphasized the importance of empowering women in media, noting that the initiative strengthens both professional capacity and the role of female journalists in promoting informed public discourse.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity, highlighting that the training not only enhanced their technical knowledge but also boosted their confidence in reporting responsibly in an increasingly digital media environment.
This initiative is part of FIMO’s ongoing commitment to support women in media, promote ethical journalism, and contribute to a more professional and accountable media landscape in Somaliland.
