The Social Affairs Committee of the Somaliland House of Representatives met with representatives of the countryโ€™s media associations to deliberate on the ongoing process of revising and enhancing the Somaliland Press Law.

The law, which has recently been submitted to the House of Representatives, has undergone extensive review, amendments, and consultations over a prolonged period to ensure it addresses the evolving needs of the media sector while safeguarding press freedoms.

During the meeting, participants emphasized the importance of the law and discussed the key issues it should address, including journalistsโ€™ rights, professional ethics, and accountability standards. Both sides agreed on the necessity of a collaborative approach, ensuring that the revised legislation reflects the realities of Somalilandโ€™s media landscape while protecting the rights and responsibilities of journalists.

The session was attended by members of the Social Affairs Committee, leaders of media associations including SOLJA (Somaliland Journalists Association), WIJA, and FIMO, as well as representatives from independent media outlets. Discussions focused on ensuring the law strikes a balance between freedom of expression, journalistic ethics, and professional standards, creating a framework that promotes responsible reporting and transparency.

Officials and media representatives highlighted that the revised Press Law is expected to enhance the legal and professional environment for journalists, improve accountability, and strengthen the mediaโ€™s role in informing the public and supporting democratic processes in Somaliland.

The meeting marks a significant milestone in the collaborative effort between parliamentary bodies and media stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, balanced, and modern legal framework for the press.
