The media community in Somaliland had the honor of welcoming Anna Maria Adhikari, Public Information Officer at the Strategic Communications and Public Affairs Group (SCPAG), United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), for a productive meeting focused on the state of journalism in the region.
During the discussions, stakeholders provided an overview of the current media environment in Somaliland, highlighting both opportunities and persistent challenges. A key point of concern was the absence of a comprehensive media law, which continues to affect press freedom and journalistic accountability across the region.
Participants also drew attention to the difficulties faced by female journalists, including limited representation, workplace harassment, and societal pressures. The dialogue emphasized the need for greater protection, support, and empowerment of women in media.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen collaboration between local media institutions and international partners such as UNSOM, and to work collectively toward a more inclusive, secure, and regulated media space in Somaliland.
